Missouri reports first case of H5 avian flu, three contacts under surveillance

MISSOURI – After a patient with avian flu was recently hospitalized in Missouri, health officials have identified three contacts, including two health care workers, and are keeping them under close surveillance.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Share on Friday The first confirmed cases of avian influenza A in Missouri involved two health care workers and one household contact.

According to the CDC…

  • One health care worker had mild respiratory symptoms but was not tested for influenza “because he had recovered from the illness before the study began.”
  • One health care worker who had contact with Missouri's first avian flu case “was tested negative for influenza.”
  • One household contact became ill on the same day that the first avian flu case was diagnosed in Missouri, but the contact was not tested and “has since recovered,” the report said.

The CDC added that the fact that the two contacts developed symptoms at the same time “does not support person-to-person transmission but suggests that there was a shared exposure.”

The patient, an adult whose name, age and sex are unknown, was admitted to the hospital on August 22. Public health officials sent a specimen from the patient upon admission and The first human case of H5 infection was confirmed in Missouri on September 6th..

H5 is found primarily in wild birds and poultry, and more recently in dairy cattle and other animals, and can also be transmitted to humans through close contact with infected animals or contaminated environments.

but, The CDC made the decision on September 12th. It was not possible to determine whether the Missouri cases were linked to animal transmission, and Missouri health officials said the patients did not report any history of contact with animals.

The Missouri case marks the 15th case of H5 reported in the U.S. since 2022, according to the CDC.

Following its latest updates, the CDC recommends that, when possible, people avoid contact with sick or dead animals, including wild birds, poultry, other domestic birds, and other wild and domestic animals (including cattle).
