MALIBU, Calif. — Three small earthquakes struck Malibu Wednesday morning, the latest in a series of about six dozen quakes centered near the city in the past month, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first of the three quakes, with a magnitude of 2.7, struck at about 1:46 a.m., and the second and third — with magnitudes of 1.8 and 2.2 — struck in quick succession at about 6:22 a.m., and their depths ranged from about 6 to 18 miles.

Weak tremors during Wednesday's larger quake were felt widely across Malibu, the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Fernando Valley and as far away as Santa Ana, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

No injuries or damage were reported.

The quake's epicenter was about 3.5 miles north of Point Dume in the Santa Monica Mountains, an area that has seen a total of 72 earthquakes in the past 30 days, many of them small, according to the USGS.

The largest earthquake was a magnitude 4.7 on September 12. Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.4 struck on the same day, and a magnitude of 3.2 struck the region on September 13.

Seismologist Lucy Jones told the Los Angeles Times that the September 12 quake at the time was part of the 14th seismic sequence this year in Southern California with a magnitude of at least 4 or greater — which broke a record for the past 65 years.

According to the Southern California Earthquake Network, a collaborative project between the California Institute of Technology and the USGS, the quake was probably the largest to hit the immediate Malibu area since record keeping began in 1932. Over the past 92 years, there have been five earthquakes larger than a 4.0 degree 7 miles from the epicenter on September 12.

The unusual increase in seismic activity does not mean that a “big earthquake” is just around the corner. There are two theories: that seismic activity increases in an area before a large earthquake, or that seismic activity decreases before a large earthquake, the Times reported.

The Southern California Earthquake Center says the city is not located on a major fault line and will not be exposed to total destruction.

“You would have to have a longer or larger surface area on a fault to have a larger earthquake. You can't have a force of eight on a small, local fault,” center director Mark L. Benthen said in a USC publication. “And the faults that were “The Malibu earthquakes were close to it, probably the biggest earthquake that could happen would be a magnitude of 7.0 or so.”

John Vidal, a professor of geosciences at the University of Southern California, said the recent quakes can be classified as aftershocks of the 4.7-magnitude quake that struck on September 12.

“We do not expect these earthquakes to increase the chance of anything happening or decrease the chance of anything happening,” he said.
