Many people know how to “fall, cover and hold still” in the event of an earthquake – but what should people do if they are asleep when the ground starts to move?

Most of the thousands of people who felt the 5.7 magnitude quake near Wellington early Sunday morning were still in bed at the time.

Tom Wilson, chief science adviser at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said the safest thing for these people to do is to stay in their beds until the shaking stops.

“If you're in bed when an earthquake happens, stay in bed — stay, cover, and hold on,” he said. “Cover your head and neck with a pillow [and] Wait until the shaking stops.”

ACC injury data shows that people are more likely to be injured trying to get somewhere else during an earthquake.

“Moving during an earthquake increases your likelihood of getting hurt,” Wilson said.

“That's why we're urging people to get down, cover and hold still – or if you're in bed, stay down, cover and hold still.”

Joe Horrocks, chief research and resilience officer at the Natural Hazards Commission Toka To Aki, said people could take other measures before an earthquake to try to better protect themselves if a tremor occurs at night.

“Simple measures such as securing heavy furniture and removing items that could fall on top of your bed can make a big difference in preventing injuries.
