Debroy was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2015 in recognition of his contributions.

Bibek Debroy was Chairman of the Indian Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. He was appointed chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), a deemed university, in July 2024. His experience further includes positions in the Ministry of Economic Affairs (1994-95), National Council of Applied Economic Research (1995-96) and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Studies (1997-2005).

From 2005 to 2006, Debroy was associated with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and from 2007 to 2015, he contributed significantly to the Center for Policy Research.
