“Puzzled.” A 1.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in North Stamford

The cause of last week's mysterious, explosive noises in Stamford has not yet been determined, but some are wondering if Monday's event could be related.

The US Geological Survey confirmed that a 1.3-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Stamford on Monday.

“It's scary,” says Rachel Nelson of Stamford. “It is uncomfortable to feel your home shaking and find out within minutes that your community felt the same thing.”

Officials were unable to confirm whether the sounds of explosions reported in the same area last Thursday and Friday were related to the small earthquake.

“This is confusing right now,” says Christine Cardone. “I think it makes the problem a little bit more complicated.”

Stamford Fire Chief Rex Morris says the department received more than two dozen phone calls after Monday's earthquake.

Fire officials say no injuries were reported, and the investigation again found no damage to any homes or buildings.

“We are prepared to handle fires, floods, car accidents,” says Chief Morris. “Even an anomaly like this because we will check it.”

Neighbors continue to raise concerns about a major transmission line from the Tennessee Gas Pipeline that runs through the area, but the company claims everything on its end is running smoothly.

“We need to know what it is. And it's really important that we know what it is,” Nelson says.

Fire officials say you should always call 911 if you feel or hear anything suspicious such as an explosion.
