A strong, shallow M6.4 earthquake strikes near the coast of Noto Peninsula, Japan

A strong, shallow earthquake recorded by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) as a M6.4 struck near the coast of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan at 13:47 UTC on 26 November 2024. The agency reported a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). USGS is EMSC reporting M6.1 at 10 km depth.

The epicenter was located 35 km (21.8 mi) northwest of Hakuei (population 24,529), 42 km (26 mi) westwest of Anamizu (population 17,840), and 44 km (27 mi) west of Nanao (population 45,309 ). Ishikawa, Japan.

According to USGS PAGER, it is estimated that 86,000 people felt strong tremors, 1,330,000 moderate, and 4,846,000 mild.

The US Geological Survey issued a green alert for shaking-related deaths and economic losses. There is a low possibility of casualties and damage.

In general, residents in this area reside in structures resistant to seismic vibrations, although there are structures at risk. The predominant weak building types are heavy timber frames and reinforced/reinforced masonry.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides, fires and liquefaction that may have contributed to the losses.
