Histophable ghosts can be just lights coming from earthquakes

Susan Hug, a seismic specialist in the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was roaming archives for information about an earthquake of 7.3 people that struck Charleston, South Carolina, in 1886. A group of strange stories from a small town north of Charleston.
“This was the thing you hide in the back of your mind,” says Hig. Initially, you didn't think much. But near Halloween, when USGs drew a relationship between science and ancient emails, you remember: “This made me think – what about those actual ghost stories?”
Summerville Light was a glowing gram by the locals throughout the 1960s on a nearby abandoned railway. Along these tracks, she has legend, a widow is still looking for her husband's remains, a railway worker in an accident. The street light that turns orange, green and blue is said to be its lantern.
Hug, ever the world, has its own interpretation. I noticed that the old calculations were consistent with a phenomenon, although many of this world are hardly less mysterious: the earthquake lights.
Earthquake lights
The relationship between land radiance and strange radiance has been contained thousands of years ago. In the mid-nineteenth century, Irish engineer Robert Malet-who is considered the “Founder of Seismology”-made a list of reports dating back to 1606 BC. The clouds in the sky, decreased in the air, all in a group of colors.
However, despite these accounts, Hug says he recently in the 1980s, when she was a graduate student, the presence of the earthquake lights was still for discussion.
“I think most earthquake scientists are now accepting that they are real,” she says. “But I do not think that there is a really mature acceptable theory to explain it.”
However, she believes that Summerville Light is a competitor, as it argued in a paper published in January 2025 in the journal of seismic research letters. It is clear that the South Carolina area has an active mistake, and the scenes occurred near the huge earthquake center 1886. What is more, he hit many smaller bulbs in the same area in 1959 and 1960, close to light note.
There was other evidence. The witnesses reported that their cars were shaken violently when they saw the light, which “screaming with the earthquake,” said Hug. Residents of the loud old buildings in the city heard noise on the upper floor, “which re -shakes this right to the threshold of perception.”

What causes the earthquake lights?
Evidence is only circumstantial, of course. “Can you not arrest them in the act. They are transient, and they were not captured by any of the tools we put.” In addition, reports ran from Summerville decades ago.
However, you think there are reasonable mechanisms that highlight earthquakes. One of the more than Yuji Enomoto comes, a Japanese earthquake at Xincho University. In a paper published in July 2024, it was suggested that the earthquake lights can be caused by the chemical reactions of the gases, such as radon and methane, emitted from underground.
The railway itself may play a major role – everything that steel can accumulate fixed electricity, providing a spark to ignite some gases. This can understand similar traditions widely across the country of the train.
“There is a full army of ghosts with lanterns wandering in railways looking for cut heads,” she says. “You start thinking, well, is this a group of ingredients?”
Not everyone is convinced. John Il, the earthquake at the University of Boston and the East Coast Earthquake historian, is skeptical that what is going on in Smartel can be the result of the imperceptible tremors; In its experience, the earthquake lights are usually associated with the main seismic events.
He points out that the San Andreas error in California delivers mini -seismology around the clock, and if the fracture has gave birth to luminous areas, “We will get reports on the earthquake lights every day.”
However, EBEL agrees that logic exists. Even after a century and a half, the coastal plain in South Carolina is still vulnerable to the subsequent shocks of the 1886 earthquake, so it is reasonable to search for a relationship between this earthquake and lights. He just wants to see strong evidence before extracting any conclusions.

A message from behind
Hug's work has so far gathered historical records and theoretical research – it is recognized that it is more expert than . To follow the path, you will need to do field work, and perhaps a gas launch test. But this requires financing.
“I imagined a suggestion writing to say that I want to go mainly to breach of the ghost in Smartel,” she says. “I have somewhat criticized in this idea.”
It seems that it seems, Hug hopes for her mysterious may be useful. If it turns out that the phenomenon of “railways-God” is a reliable sign of shallow rift activity, then these stories can help scientists identify potential risk areas-a notorious challenge in the eastern United States, where earthquakes are few and far apart.
“This”, as you say, “is the place where it becomes interesting and less trivial.”
At the present time, at least, the Summerville puzzle continues. Who says that there is no spectral widow roaming in moonlight paths, looking for her husband's head? But this, Hug adds, “outside the scope of earthquake.”
