Halden and his colleagues have also developed an online tool that allows researchers to standardize the measurement of microplastics in human tissue by converting information about the number of plastic particles into units of mass and surface area. Their study was presented today at the American Chemical Society Fall 2020 Virtual Conference.

“There is currently no ideal analytical method to quantify microplastic particles in human tissue,” says Dick Vethaak of the Deltares Research Center in The Netherlands.
