Researchers at the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington discovered a statistical relationship between hospital bed counts (ICU and non-ICU) occupied by COVID-19 patients in the state and reported mortality. today, General Internal Medicine Journal, This study is considered to be the first study to examine this association using actual state-level data.

“These estimates will help us better understand the COVID-19 pandemic projections in the United States, especially when the states are monitoring. , And provide important clinical insights to hospitals in terms of assessing capacity and readiness of hospital beds and ICU beds,” said M. Carlson University’s Professor of Medical Industry Leadership (MILI) and Academic Director. Pinar Karaka Mandic says. School of management.

Utilizing the U of M COVID-19 Hospitalization Follow-up Project, we surveyed data from 23 states reporting daily ICU and non-ICU bed utilization by COVID-19 patients.

The survey revealed the following:

  • COVID-19 patients accounted for approximately 20% of ICU bed use and approximately 5% of non-ICU bed capacity in all states surveyed.
  • A 1% increase in ICU bed use (17 beds on average) was associated with a 2.84 increase in COVID-19 mortality over the next 7 days.
  • A 1% increase in non-ICU bed utilization (130 beds on average) resulted in a 17.84 increase in COVID-19 mortality.

“ICU and non-ICU bed use was significantly associated with an increase in overall COVID-19 mortality over the next 7 days, as a percentage of the state’s bed capacity,” Washington University Faculty of Economics and CHOICE Institute chief. “The association strength of using ICU beds was higher than using non-ICU beds.”

The authors have found that the results apply across various alternative specifications.

“Most policy interventions to address the outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States focus on “curve flattening”-an approach that extends hospitalization over a longer period to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system. ”Said Soumya Sen, an associate professor and scholar. Director of Management Information Systems Research Center (MISRC) at Carlson School, where he co-authored research. “The predictive model that notifies these COVID-19 cases, hospitalization, Impact on (ICU) Demand and Subsequent Mortality”

The study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, so it may have been possible to increase the number of hospital beds in some states. However, for ICU beds, the authors say that it was probably difficult to do so due to infrastructure constraints.

Other research authors include Dr. Archelle Georgiou, Chief Health Officer of Starkey Hearing Technologies, MILI Resident at Carlson School, and Yi Zhu, a PhD student at the School of Information and Decision Science at Carlson School. It was
