Vitamin D deficiency affects almost 50% of the world’s population. Recent data revealed that Indians as high as 76% have insufficient vitamin D levels. The study also found that the prevalence of deficiency was highest among Indians aged 18-30 years and was evenly spread across all parts of the country. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with decreased bone mass and weakness, which increases the risk of bone disorders such as fractures and osteomalacia (osteomalacia), osteopenia, and osteoporosis. Source of vitamin D

Technically, adults should maintain about 30 ng/mL vitamin D as adequate vitamin D levels. An efficient source of vitamin D is sunlight. It helps the endogenous synthesis of vitamin D in the skin. Few foods can provide a stable daily supply of vitamin D. Mainly fish such as salmon and tuna, liver oil of fish, cheese and egg yolk. Eggs are actually the best source of vitamin D for children. It should meet daily vitamin D requirements with a stint of 10-15 minutes in the sun twice a day between 10am and 3pm. Most patients are advised to determine which of these vitamin D sources is the most accessible and to make sure they get their daily dose. If you’re missing, you need to supplement with vitamin D supplements.

What Causes Vitamin D Deficiency?

People who do not spend enough time in the sun can be victims of vitamin D deficiency. This can be due to a variety of reasons other than the amount of time you spend outdoors if the sunlight is too weak or if the sunscreen SPF you use is above 30.
