Black Retired Colorado First Joins COVID-19 Vaccine Trial-CBS Denver

Aurora, Coro. (CBS4)- Researchers at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital have begun testing the prospective COVID-19 vaccine against qualified participants. They say the Moderna vaccine could be a pandemic game changer if it worked.

They plan to recruit up to 1,000 patients. One of the first people to register, an African American man, feels involved in civil duty.

“Throughout history, people have volunteered for different tests, and I think we need to prepay them,” said Michael Rouse of Central Park.

The 65-year-old retiree does exactly that.

“The virus is here, and it doesn’t go anywhere,” Rouse told CBS4 health specialist Kathy Walsh.
He volunteered immediately and was partly prompted by the call for people of color to participate in the study.

“The black community has been hit hard by this, and it’s very important for older African Americans to step up so that younger African Americans can survive,” he said. ..

UCHealth is one of 89 research sites nationwide in the Phase 3 trial of the Moderna vaccine, called the mRNA-1273 trial. The goal is to enroll 30,000 subjects. Half receive placebo and half receive vaccine.

“If it’s effective and safe, it could be a game changer,” said Dr. Thomas Campbell, a doctor and chief investigator of infectious diseases for UC Health research.

He understands that the minority hesitates to participate.

“There was abuse in the past,” Campbell said, “what we consider an unethical experiment.”

“It was a thing of the past. Rouse needs to believe that scientists, now doctors, are all taking care of us.

He took his first shot on August 20th.

“I’m perfectly fine and shot for almost a week,” he said.

Now he is expected to continue his daily life.

“I was told not to go out looking for the virus. It is there. It will find you,” he explained.

Rouse gets the second shot 28 days after the first one. Then wait and see. He is not worried and is happy to contribute. Participants will be monitored for at least one year to determine vaccine safety and whether they are infected with COVID-19.

While clinical trials usually take years and progress in sequence, experts say, the mRNA-1273 test is much faster because researchers around the world are competing to develop vaccines. is.

But with the July 9 release announcing the trial, Campbell warned of possible setbacks.

“I’m excited about the pace of progress. It’s unheard of for viral infections to drive vaccines at this rate,” Campbell said. “It’s a great testimony of what people can do when they turn to it and work together. We hope to succeed, but the sad reality is that most vaccine candidates don’t. We need to be prepared for failure.”

UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital is the only hospital in Colorado for this study.
