Five more West Nile viruses confirmed in Miami-Dade County
Miami Dade County, Florida. – Miami Dade County’s Florida Department of Health has identified five additional cases of West Nile virus among Miami Dade residents.
Both cases were the result of community outbreaks, health officials said.
There were a total of 49 West Nile virus infections in Miami Dade County this year.
According to health officials, most people infected with the virus have no symptoms. Approximately one in five infected patients will get a fever, and symptoms such as headache, pain, and fatigue will appear.
Most patients recover within about a week, less than 1% develop severe symptoms, and some become fatal.
Health officials say people over the age of 60 and those with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of developing serious symptoms.
According to FDOH, West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne diseases in the mainland US.
The following is a list of precautions that health authorities in Florida recommend to residents to take:

・ drain Water from trash, house gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flowerpots, or sprinklers or other containers of rainwater.
・ throw away Old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances, and other unused items.
・ Beautiful in the sky 1-2 times a week, bathing birds and watering pets.
・ protect Boats and cars from the rain with tarpaulins that do not store water.
・ maintain A well chlorinated pool in good condition. Empty plastic pool when not in use.
・ cover Clothes and repellents and skin.
・ clothing -Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. This type of protection may be necessary for people who have to work where the mosquito is.
・ Repellent -Apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing.
・Always use the insect repellent according to the label. Water repellents including DEET, picaridine, lemon eucalyptus oil, paramenthane diol and IR3535 are effective.
・Use a mosquito net to protect children under 2 months of age.
Health officials also advise the public to put screens on doors and windows to keep mosquitoes away from home.
