A disappointing ODI tour ended in defeat for the West Indies, who lost the third and final game against Sri Lanka at Pallekele, losing 3-0 in the series as a whole. Kieron Pollard's men gave up hard in their 308 pursuit against fit hosts, but ultimately failed to cross the finish line.
However, there was a clear silver lining for men in brown. The efforts of Fabian Allen, the talented versatile who is just starting to make an impact internationally, have been almost enough to pull defeat from the jaws of victory. 37 from just 15 balls, including five limits, was a demonstration of how this young Jamaican can be explosive.

In the end, of course, that was not enough to help the West Indies seal a consolation victory, one that would have added sparkle to a frustrating week. ODI is not the most pressing issue at the moment, but the overall performance of the white ball is clearly relevant, and Pollard will be angry that his men could not have scored a victory against a mediocre Sri Lanka at three opportunities. However, the Allen strike is a positive and an obvious step forward that the Windies configuration can take out of the series and use to prepare for the next challenges ahead.
