Mothers have been threatened with high fines and imprisonment after refusing to send their children to school because they are clinically vulnerable and “fearing the virus.”

Katy Simpson, 29, Type 1 Diabetes mellitus, Asthma and hypothyroidism, have hardly left home since the blockade was first introduced in March. The coronavirus is so dangerous to her that she left two children from the Galileo Academy Trust in North Yorkshire, Damian and Alisha, both at home.

However, if an education and welfare officer visited Katie and did not return Damian and Alisha to school, she handed her a £ 2,500 fine and a court warning threatening to imprisonment for up to three months.

Katie, an unemployed person in Redcar, North Yorkshire, said: ‘If I get infected with that virus, I have no two ways to die.

“I’m a single mom and I don’t have a family to help my children. I can’t take that risk.

“Whenever I get a cold or flu, I get it and get knocked 6 times.

“The virus has killed thousands of people, and we are all trapped again, and it looks worse.

“I tried to explain to them, but they just don’t listen.”

Under the Education Act of 1996, parents are found to be in violation of the law if their child is unable to attend school on a regular basis and there is no “reasonable justification”.

A letter from a school official said: ‘Absence from school reduces the opportunity for students to get a good education. It reduces the prospects for future life and disrupts school routines and the learning of others.

“It can leave students and communities vulnerable to antisocial behavior and juvenile delinquency.

“Despite knowing the seriousness of the situation, you could not (as well) ensure regular attendance of your child at school (but you attended meetings or provided support). I was particularly concerned that I couldn’t even engage in. You).

“In light of this, I have no choice but to initiate prosecution proceedings for more serious crimes under the 1996 Education Act, contrary to Section 444 (1A).

“This crime means that if the court finds you guilty, you can be fined up to £ 2,500 and sentenced to up to three months in prison.”

Despite this written warning, Katie said she had no plans to return her son and daughter to school and was so scared that she was unsure if she could go to court.

The single mother said:’They tried to set up a meeting for me to attend, but it seems deaf. I can’t leave the house because I’m afraid of getting a virus.

“Even if others take them to school, the number of people they come in contact with is unsafe. It’s not all of me because Damian also suffers from asthma.

“The education and welfare officer eventually stood at my doorstep and held a meeting, but it wasn’t too far away.

“Now they are threatening me by going to court. I’m too scared to know if I can go.”
