Studies show that mothers’ vitamin D is associated with their child’s IQ, showing disparities among black women
Optimal nutrition during pregnancy is very important because mothers are responsible not only for their own health, but also for the health of the developing fetus. Over the years, studies have shown that vitamin D status during pregnancy plays an essential role, as well as calcium and bone health. We now know that the mother’s vitamin D supply is passed to the baby in utero and helps regulate important processes, including brain development.
the study
Fresh research published in Journal of NutritionData were drawn from the CANDLE (conditions affecting neurocognitive development and learning in early childhood) cohort that included 1,503 women in the second semester from 2006 to 2011. CANDLE researchers recruited pregnant women in Tennessee to participate in the study in 2006 and took the time to gather information about their children’s health and development.
The selection criteria for vitamin D analysis included the availability of IQ and 25 (OH) D data commonly used to assess vitamin D status.
Researchers also used multivariate linear regression to compare vitamin D status in offspring aged 4 to 6 years with the Stanford-Binet IQ score and also investigated whether associations differed by race.
Survey results
The authors conclude that: “Maternal 25 (OH) D in the second trimester is positively correlated with IQ at 4-6 years, indicating that vitamin D status during pregnancy may be an important predictor of neurocognitive development. Suggests. These findings may help inform prenatal nutrition recommendations and may be particularly relevant to blacks and other dark-skinned women at high risk of vitamin D deficiency. There is. “
Approximately 46% of mothers in this study were deficient in vitamin D during pregnancy, with lower vitamin D levels in black women compared to white women.
Melissa Mellow, lead author of research and research scientists in the Department of Child Health, Behavior and Development at the Seattle Children’s Institute, said that vitamin D deficiency is common among the general public and pregnant women, while black women Danger that said it was rising. Melough added that the study spotlights this challenge and hopes that healthcare providers will be better able to address the disparities between women in color.
Disparity
“Melanin pigments protect the skin from sun damage, but by blocking UV rays, melanin also reduces vitamin D production in the skin. Therefore, in our study, the rate of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant black women It was not surprising that it was high .. Even though many pregnant women are taking prenatal vitamins, this may not correct their existing vitamin D deficiency. ” Melough said. “I hope our work brings more awareness to this problem, which shows the long-term effects of prenatal vitamin D on children and their neurocognitive development, and providers should pay more attention. Emphasizes that there are specific groups. Extensive testing Raising vitamin D levels is not generally recommended, but care providers pay attention to high-risk individuals, including black women. I think it should be. “
Beyond the study, Mellow said that 80% of pregnant black women in the United States could have vitamin D deficiency.
Although such observational studies cannot prove the cause, Mellow believes her findings are important and requires further study.
Easy fix
Melough, despite the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency “The good news is that there is a relatively simple solution. It can be difficult to get enough vitamin D on a diet, and exposure to sunlight can fill this gap for everyone. Not that, so a good solution is to take supplements. “
When it comes to vitamin D consumed through food, it is one of the most difficult nutrients to get from the diet. The recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 600 IU, and on average, Americans consume less than 200 IU in their diet. If you don’t fill the gap with sun exposure or supplements, you’ll probably run out of people who are well warned.
Further research is needed to determine optimal levels of vitamin D during pregnancy, but Melough hopes that this study will help develop nutritional recommendations for pregnant women. Nutrition and screening can be influential strategies for reducing health inequalities, especially among black women and women at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.
Melough pointed out three important points from this survey.
- Vitamin D deficiency is common during pregnancy, and black women are at greater risk because the melanin pigments in the skin reduce the production of vitamin D.
- High vitamin D levels in pregnant mothers can promote brain development and increase IQ scores in childhood
- Screening and nutrition may correct vitamin D deficiency in high-risk individuals and promote cognitive function in offspring
“I want people to know that it is a common problem and can affect the development of children.” Melough said. “Even with a healthy diet, vitamin D deficiency can occur, sometimes related to our lifestyle, skin pigmentation, or other factors beyond our control. I will. “
