Christchurch City Council to consider accepting the Citizens’ War Memorial as a gift

This week, Christchurch City Council will consider accepting the Citizens’ War Memorial in Cathedral Square as a gift.

The trustees of the church’s property wrote to the council on November 5, offering to sacrifice the memorial.

The memorial, which commemorates the Cantabrian residents who died in the war, must be moved from its current location next to Christ Church Cathedral so that restoration work can proceed on the cathedral.

And it has some damage caused by earthquake and rust from the inside, and it also needs repair and strengthening.

Under the terms of the proposal to the Board, the CPT will prepare and submit requests for resources and build approval for the memorial transfer and also commit to the balance of funds from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Fund to achieve the move.

The company created to oversee the cathedral’s restoration, Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd, will dismantle the monument and prepare the component parts for transportation and storage.

If the gift is accepted, the council will be responsible for locating a new site for the memorial, providing temporary storage for it, financing it and overseeing its repair and strengthening.

The council already has $ 270,000 in its long-term plan to repair and renovate the memorial because it always bears responsibility for its maintenance, under an agreement with the church.

In a report prepared for elected members, council staff recommended that council members accept the gift – and identified public lands near the old police booth in Cathedral Square as a preferred location for the memorial.

Staff recently met with high-ranking representatives of the Returnees and Services Association who favor the preservation of the memorial in Cathedral Square, on the council floor as close as possible to its current location.
