ICU admission has increased by about 70% in the last two weeks
Sacramento, CA (KTXL) – Over the past two weeks, hospital admissions to intensive care units have risen to about 70%, according to the state.
It leaves less than 10% of the beds available — situations where the state does not want to enter.
“If we don’t do anything about it, the facility is overwhelmed,” said Dr. Tan Duong.
Dr. Duong knows directly how bad things happen in the hospital intensive care unit.
Dr. Duong, who is currently practicing in Sacramento, just graduated from a trainee in July and spent most of the first wave of this pandemic in the ICU of a hospital in South Florida.
“I’ve never seen my ICU overwhelmed like this pandemic,” Dr. Duong told FOX40. “We had to do for the first patient wave in April, we didn’t have to open up more areas just for one pair of patients.”
Dr. Duong said that normal ICU occupancy varies from hospital to hospital.
However, according to a 2013 Ministry of Health and Human Services survey, the typical occupancy rate of ICU is between 68% and 75%.
The latest state figures for the Greater Sacramento region are 14.8% of available capacity, or about 85% of occupancy.
“Many of my friends are currently receiving critical care and their hospitals are overwhelmed. If people can reduce their outings, it will help many healthcare professionals,” explains Dr. Duong. did.
The ICU has more specialized equipment such as ventilators and specialty medicines, which can be in short supply if there are too many patients.
“Not only COVID, but also medicine is scarce, but if you are on a ventilator, you will need medicine such as sedatives,” explained Dr. Duong. “Some very ill patients need medications like pressure. If their blood pressure is very low, we need to raise their blood pressure with these pressure medications. Otherwise, you may end up with organ failure. “
However, Dr. Duong said it was not only related to the ICU bed, but also to staffing. The ICU usually requires more nurses per patient.
“One ICU nurse will have one or two patients, compared to a bedside nurse on the floor with six patients,” said Dr. Duong. “So we can’t pull many travel nurses because the whole country has this problem. Travel nurses are pulled to all states, so fill in only from outside nurses. You can not.”
