North Dakota reports the lowest COVID-19 cases since September on low test days

BISMARCK — The North Dakota Department of Health announced on Monday, December 21, the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases on any day since September.

The department reported 78 new cases on Monday, including:

• 19 from Burleigh County, including Bismarck. The county has 365 active cases.
• 16 people from Cass County, including Fargo. The county has 562 active cases.

Approximately 4.8% of the 1,619 residents tested as part of the latest batch received positive results, and an average of 6% of residents tested in the last two weeks received positive results. Eight of Monday’s positives came from a new 15-minute test, but the state has not yet reported the number of residents who tested negative on the rapid antigen test.

The division’s spokeswoman, Nicole Pesche, said the demand for tests was declining, leading to lower test numbers over the weekend and a lower number of new positives reported on Monday. Health professionals recommend that people with COVID-19 symptoms or who may be exposed to the virus be tested.

Two virus-related deaths reported on Monday occurred in a woman in Burleigh County in her 70s and a man in Ward County in her 70s.

According to the ministry, 1,233 people in North Dakota have died from the disease since March. The state recorded an average of about 9 deaths per day in December, down from November, when an average of more than 16 deaths per day in North Dakota.

At least 750 of the state’s deaths occur in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. There are 82 infected nursing home residents in the state, a decrease of more than 300 since the beginning of the month.

Over the past month and a half, the number of active COVID-19 cases has steadily decreased from more than 10,000 on November 12. Currently, 2,655 people in North Dakota are known to be infected with the virus. Hospitalization for COVID-19 has also declined in recent weeks and is now 158.

State hospitals still suffer from staffing issues and lack of available intensive care units. Health experts believe that the first round of COVID-19 vaccination will alleviate some of the hospital staffing issues as more doctors and nurses gain immunity to the virus.

Public health officials have urged North Dakota to refrain from traveling and large-scale rallies for Christmas and New Year celebrations. After Thanksgiving, there has been little increase in incidents in the state, and experts want to avoid the January surge.
