New Jersey State Governor Phil Murphy announced on Saturday an executive order to halve the capacity of all transportation systems and ask all passengers to wear face masks.

Additionally, NJ Transit and private operators are required to provide their workers with gloves and face masks.

“Currently, for many of our important workers, public transport is the way they work and we need to protect them during the trip,” Murphy told a news conference.

Murphy said it required New Jersey Transit “and all private operators cut capacity on all trains, buses, light rail vehicles and paratransit vehicles to 50% of the maximum.”

Murphy expanded executive orders for restaurant workers and customers, declaring that anyone who entered the restaurant and bar to take a detour must wear a mask. Restaurants and bars will also be required to provide face caps and gloves for food service personnel. All applications are valid April 13 at 8 pm.

Murphy stressed that the face caps do not mean medical masks. “We need to make it available to public health and safety responders on our frontline … There are a number of ways you can cover your mouth and nose with a bandana or home covering fabric,” Murphy said.

New Jersey reported more than 58,100 Covid-19 positive cases and 2,183 deaths on Saturday.
