Halifax-Nova Scotia reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and announced a vaccination plan. The state said it would prioritize front-line healthcare professionals, caregivers and staff.

Health officials say the state will need to be vaccinated with more than one million COVID-19 vaccines in the next six months, with about 200,000 healthcare workers and caregivers aged 75 and over first lined up until April Added.

Dr. Robert Strang said the vaccine should be available to other healthcare professionals by May, adding that the vaccine will be available to the general public by the summer.

“What we need to recognize and understand is that this is by far the most complex vaccine program we have ever implemented,” Strang said on Tuesday. “Our goal is to vaccinate as many people as possible with the products we receive, as the products themselves are delivered in relatively small quantities each week,” Strang added.

Stran said early in the plan, the state could find the best way to provide the vaccine. Health officials will test different service delivery models in a few regional clinics and pharmacies, he said.

“What we have learned in the first few weeks will help us become more agile,” said Prime Minister Stephen McNeill. “We know how to move the vaccine and quickly put it in the arms of those who need it, rather than putting it in the freezer.”

Health officials said they had received 2,720 COVID-19 vaccines as of Monday, adding that starting Wednesday, those who receive the first injection will begin receiving booster shots.

John Malcolm, a former CEO of the Cape Breton District Health Department, said in an interview Tuesday that the state’s strategy is “overly conservative” and moving too slowly. He said the government should not refrain from giving booster shots, but instead immunize as many different people as possible with a single dose.

He said authorities should trust the vaccine company’s words and trust that vaccines arrive on a regular basis, eliminating the need to keep doses in reserve.

“If you’re told to provide x doses of the vaccine in the coming weeks or months, I think you have to believe their words,” Malcolm said. “It’s a bit of a risk, but not immunizing is a bigger risk.”

To date, Nova Scotia has been vaccinated with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines less than 10,000 times. The number is expected to increase to 140,000 doses of vaccine by the end of March, officials said.

Meanwhile, health officials said Tuesday that three new cases were identified in the central zone. One is a trip outside the Atlantic region and the other two are under investigation.

Strang and McNeil said they were encouraged by the fact that the number of new incidents in the state continues to decline following restrictions enacted in late November, including a ban on eating indoors.

Nova Scotia said there are 19 active reported cases of COVID-19.
