Ellis County vaccinated 300 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the general public
Citizens’ COVID-19 vaccinations will begin Tuesday afternoon, thanks to the arrival of 300 vaccines at the Ellis County Health Department last week.
Jason Kennedy, director of health services at Ellis County, said the department is currently making reservations for the first 300 people for the first shipment to Dr. 2507 Canterbury’s office.
The 300 is selected from the thousands already registered on the Department of Health website. The software program sorts 300 by Governor Laura Kelly’s Phase 2 criteria. Those who answer “yes” to two of the three questions will be given priority. Over 65 years old, engaged in critical infrastructure work and living in group housing.
This is the first expected weekly arrival of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Shots are free.
“We’re talking to thousands of people in our community at Phase 2 standards,” Kennedy said. “We cannot serve the entire population with 300 doses. That is not possible, but we hope to receive weekly shipments of the vaccine.”

The vaccine was shipped directly to the health sector via UPS from Healthcare Supplier McKesson’s new cold chain technology facility in Lebanon, Tennessee.
It arrived in an insulated cardboard box embedded in multiple thermal layers surrounded by reusable cold packs. Each box of vaccine contains 10 vials, and each vial contains 10 doses. Therefore, a box of 300 times is smaller than a velveeta cheese brick.
“When it appears, it’s not impressive,” said Kennedy in a small box.
From there until the day before it is needed, it will be stored frozen in a freezer in the Fahrenheit minus 22.6 degrees department. Health officials deliver it to the vaccination site with a hard-side refrigerated cooler provided by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The remaining dose must be given within 6 hours after the cap is opened to give the first shot.
“That’s why it’s imperative that people show up for their promises, because they don’t waste vaccines,” Kennedy said.
The vaccine is administered in a vacant retail space at Gordmans in Big Creek Crossing, with an entrance from outside the western door at the northern end of the mall.
Internally, three different stations will be staffed by the Health Department, First Care Clinic, HaysMed, Knoll Clinic and Hess Clinic clinics, and Ellis County Emergency Services.
From 1:30 pm on Tuesday, people will check in, take a shot and wait for 15 minutes to be observed at the EMS recovery station. Kennedy estimates 50 shots an hour.

KDHE said on Tuesday that the federal government would notify KDHE about the vaccines available in Kansas. Direct shipments will arrive the following Monday or Tuesday.

The appointment is scheduled 24 hours in advance and will be postponed if the vaccine does not arrive on time.
“We really really want to be sure that the vaccine is here before we schedule a lot of people,” Kennedy said. “We’ll need patience from the general public for the next few weeks … If the shipment is always here on Monday, we can schedule the appointment a little longer and give people a little more lead time.”
He hopes that future shipments will be larger. If so, he said the medical community would be prepared with Big Creek Crossing.
“You can expand to the speed you need, more people, more stations,” he said. “We have space and flow, so I think we can expand to get more vaccines.”
According to Kennedy, if thousands of doses occur and the mall isn’t running well, you can add more clinics.
