The county did not assign the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine in the first week of rollout | Coronavirus Outbreak
According to the Texas Department of Health, Denton County has not been assigned the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine before the state distributes the vaccine in the first week.
The recently approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires only one dose, whereas the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are recommended to be given twice each at approximately 1-month intervals. According to a Friday news release from DSHS, the state will receive approximately 245,200 doses of the new vaccine distributed to registered providers.
However, none of the new Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be offered to state hub providers, including Denton County Public Health, and mass shipping is usually a priority. The three FEMA sites in Dallas, Arlington, and Houston receive the same doses as hundreds of pharmacies and clinics that DSHS calls “additional providers.”
Each hub provider is set to receive at least 1,000 doses of either the Pfizer vaccine or the modelna vaccine. Within that group, DCPH remains the largest recipient with an allocation of 25,740 Pfizer shots. This is the same shipment as last week.
At a Denton County Commissioner Court meeting last week, DCPH director Matt Richardson said it was unclear when the county could begin receiving Johnson & Johnson shipments. The county has been receiving Pfizer doses exclusively since the week of February 8th, except for an ongoing second dose, which the state has not previously notified through its weekly quota list.
DCPH spokesman Jennifer Rainey, who arrived on Friday, said he had not yet developed a system for who would receive a single dose shot when cargo began to arrive.
