The Whitsunday earthquake at CQ felt an upgrade in scale

The earthquake that shook Whitsundays last week was upgraded from its initial strength rating.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck last week was upgraded to 5 magnitude by Geoscience Australia.

This major upgrade means that the earthquake has experienced 1.6 times more movement at its epicenter.

A spokesman for Geoscience Australia said that a reassessment of the earthquake was common after the initial earthquake, with the aim of spreading the urgent information within 15 minutes.

“In the wake of large earthquakes, it is important for earthquake warning centers around the world … to issue quick notifications of an earthquake, its location and magnitude, to the emergency management authorities, the media and the general public,” the spokesman said.

“It is common for earthquake sites and magnitude to be reassessed in the coming hours or days as more data becomes available, as well as more comprehensive analysis.

“In the case of the last Whitsunday earthquake, this more comprehensive analysis led to a slight change in the earthquake’s location and an increase in its strength from 4.8 to 5.0”

The spokesman said the magnitude of the earthquake was calculated based on the average size determined for each seismic recording site.

The 0.2 magnitude upgrade caused the Whitsundays earthquake 1.6 times more ground movement than initially recorded.

The spokesman said that while it was a significant change in terms of potential earthquake damage, it was a relatively small change in amplitude vibration.

“The magnitude of the earthquake is represented using a logarithmic scale. For example, this means that the increase in the Earth’s movement from a magnitude 3 earthquake to a magnitude of 4 will be a factor of 10 at the center of the earthquake,” he said.

“An earthquake of magnitude 5 will cause 100 times more movement than magnitude 3.

“Therefore, the difference in earthquake we see from earthquakes is increasing very rapidly with the increase in the size of the earthquake.

“While (a 0.2 degree change) is important in terms of potential earthquake damage, it is a relatively small change in amplitude of shaking when we consider the full spectrum of ground shaking possible from earthquakes across a set of scales.”

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
