12 new coronavirus cases in NSW | Whyalla News
Four new coronavirus cases in a nursing home in western Sydney are one of the twelve new infectious diseases identified in NSW.
Anglicare Newmarch House in Caddens, the fifth dead on Friday morning, recorded 48 infections, making it the largest ongoing coronavirus cluster in NSW.
About 31 out of 100 odd residents were infected, NSW health minister Brad Hazard confirmed on Saturday.
On Friday he expressed “all the condolences of the community” to the family of a 96-year-old resident.
Women had multiple health problems. On Thursday, a woman in her late 70s died. After a woman in her 90s and two men died earlier.
Hazard described the virus as “whimsical,” “energetic,” and “despicable,” urging the public to continue to comply with social distance restrictions.
“If people are too relaxed or self-satisfied, a virus can develop,” he said.
“We know we’re doing well, but don’t let it put you in a false sense of security.”
Karen Webb, NSW Police Assistant, said about 1% of the state’s population is not complying with social distance restrictions.
“I don’t know if it’s arrogant, ignorant, or qualified,” she told reporters on Saturday.
Webb said police would only issue infringement notices if people were unable to respond to the warning.
As of Saturday at 10:45 am, there were 6689 cases of coronavirus in Australia and 2994 in NSW.
In Australia 80 people have died from the virus.
More than 2000 people have recovered from the virus in NSW, 19 are receiving intensive care, and 15 need ventilators.
NSW is strengthening its COVID-19 test plan, which checks over 8,000 people per day.
On Friday, Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian said that anyone with a symptom or who is worried about COVID-19 needs to come up and be tested.
Dr Kelly Chant, NSW Chief Health Officer, said officials have worked to limit the risk that COVID-19 enters a nursing home.
Grant Millard, CEO of Anglicare Sydney, said Newmarch House could handle COVID-19 for about 50 days.
On Friday, the organization had a full complement of staff to take care of the residents.
With 55 staff members isolated at New March House, the federal government has energized the “surge workforce,” including deploying an emergency response team at the facility.
