No face mask? In Summerville, it could cost $ 300 – NBC Boston
Residents of Somerville, Massachusetts should wear face covers when they leave the public later this week.
Mayor Joseph Carterton said the order, which will come into effect Wednesday, is “necessary to help stop the transmission of the coronavirus,” and will apply to anyone over the age of two.
“Not all people with COVID-19 are symptomatic. They may unknowingly carry the virus and infect others,” said Curtatone. “Wearing a face cover is one way to get around it.”
After a one week grace period, offenders may face significant fines.
“The police are committed to compassionate policing and aim to educate and alert the offenders first,” Kurtatone said in a statement. “But if you deliberately refuse to comply, you could be fined $ 300.”
The new order will be applied to indoor and outdoor public spaces such as stores, shared entrances to multi-unit homes, walkways, streets, paths, and public squares, Kurtatone said.
“The proper face cover is clean and covers the nose and mouth,” Curtatone said. “For a pinch, a scarf, bandana, or a clean cloth is enough.”
The message followed the launch of Summerville, a new community-wide testing program to protect residents from coronaviruses.
According to the city, the new testing program launched on Monday includes extensive testing, contact tracking, and safe social isolation for all residents, regardless of insurance or immigration status.
