St. Tamany Diocese, which offers NARCAN to the public for free
Covington, Louisiana — St. Tamany’s parish leaders announced on Thursday that they would provide 1,980 NARCAN kits to the public for free for those who think they need a parish.
This drug is used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. However, the effects of the drug often last longer than the effects of Nalcan, so anyone who uses the drug should see a doctor immediately.
The parish uses money from federal grants from the Justice Department to buy life-saving medicine. Many first responders in parishes already have NARCAN, as St. Tamany has the highest drug overdose in the state.
“More than ever, this can save the lives of our citizens,” parish President Mike Cooper told the crowd at a press conference to announce the program.
Each kit contains two doses of NARCAN. It also includes a QR code that can be scanned using a smartphone to explain how to administer the drug, saying that parish first responders are very easy to do.
“This is a nasal spray. It takes a couple of minutes to get into the system and the drug blocks heroin,” said Chris Kaufmann, chief of St. Tamany’s Fire Protection District 1.
All fire departments in the parish offer NARCAN to anyone who wants it. The same applies to both offices of the Florida Diocese Human Services Authority.
