Is the stock market open on July 4th (as well as July 3rd and 5th)? Will the post office deliver mail?

Thursday marks the 248th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence — and the Fourth of July has become a holiday filled with fireworks, musical celebrations and other flag-waving opportunities. (It doesn’t matter that July 2 is the actual date the United States declared independence from Britain — it was the final version of the declaration that was approved on July 4.)

As in previous years, the holiday is accompanied by a number of shutdowns, including in the stock and bond markets. And since July 4 falls on a Thursday this year, many people are thinking about a long holiday weekend — and wondering if there will be additional shutdowns on July 3 and 5.

Here's what you need to know.

Are the stock and bond markets closed on July 4th? What about July 3rd and 5th?

Yes, U.S. stock markets, including the NYSE, Nasdaq, and bond markets, will be closed. The NYSE and Nasdaq will close at 1:00 p.m. on July 3, and bond markets will close at 2:00 p.m. on July 3. Normal trading will resume on all markets on July 5.

Will banks be closed on July 4th?

Yes, you should expect banks to be closed on July 4th. Federal Reserve banks and their branches observe the holiday on Thursday, and most other banks follow the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule.

But if you need cash, you always have the option of using an ATM, of course. And you can always transfer money or use other services via your bank's app.

Is the post office open on July 4th?

The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail on July 4, and post offices will be closed.

Some postal services, however, may be available online, such as ordering stamps and other mailing supplies, printing shipping labels or scheduling post-holiday package pickup. All you need is a USPS.com account.

Are FedEx and UPS operational on July 4th?

FedEx (FDX) will not operate on July 4, except for its urgent shipments. FedEx Office stores will have modified hours. FedEx also says some of its services will operate in modified ways on July 3, such as its Express service.

UPS (UPS) will not be offering service on July 4th, with the exception of its Express Critical shipments. UPS stores may be closed. UPS advises customers to check with their local store.

Are government offices open on July 4th?

Since July 4th is a federal holiday, all non-essential federal government offices are closed (and the same is generally true for state government offices, including DMV offices).

Are schools open on July 4th?

Many American schools are on summer break. But when it comes to summer school or summer semesters, schools tend to follow federal holiday schedules, so they are likely closed as well. Check with your school district to make sure.

What about shops and restaurants?

Many shops and restaurants are open. In fact, it is a holiday that is great for discounts. Popular items on sale during the holiday include patio furniture, appliances, mattresses and summer clothing.

Some locations, however, will not be open on July 4. For example, Costco (COST) stores will be closed, but competitor Sam's Club (WMT) will be open, albeit with slightly reduced hours. So it's a good idea to check with the retailer or restaurant before heading there.
