Peter Robbins, actor who voiced Charlie Brown, dies at 65
A former child actor who was the original voice of Charlie Brown is dead at age 65.
Peter Robbins died by suicide last week, his family told Fox 5 San Diego. No other details of his death were disclosed.
Robbins, whose real name was Louis G. Nanasi, began voicing the Charles M. Schulz-created character Charlie Brown when he was 9 years old, contributing to the 1960s Peanuts shows and the classic holiday movies A Charlie Brown Christmas and Its the Great Pumpkin , Charlie Brown. Scott McGuire, who helped run a Peanuts history website called FiveCentsPlease.orgtold the Associated Press that Robbins has been the definitive version of Charlie Brown since the character was adapted into films and television, and producers struggled to find actors who can match his voice.
Robbins also appeared on TV shows like Blondie, Rawhide, The Munsters The Donna Reed Show, Get Smart and My Three Sons.
Deadline reports he quit acting in 1972 and worked as a DJ in Palm Springs for a while.
According to the New York Post, Robbins struggled with lifelong mental illness and addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol, plus a number of legal issues. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to threatening and stalking both his ex-girlfriend and a plastic surgeon who gave her a breast enhancement he paid for. He also spent time in prison for making criminal threats to a San Diego County sheriff.
I would recommend to anybody that has bipolar disorder to take it seriously because your life can turn around in the span of a month, like it did to me, Robbins told Fox 5 after his release in 2019. I came out of prison and Im a better person for it. Im much more humble and grateful and thankful that I lived through the experience.
A memorial service for Robbins will be held at a future date, according to the TV station.
