Bruce MacVittie, veteran actor, dies at 65
Bruce MacVittie, the stage and film actor known for his performances in ‘American Buffalo’, ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Million Dollar Baby’ and others over his 40-year career, died May 7 in New York. He was 65 years old.
MacVittie died in a Manhattan hospital, although the cause of death has not yet been determined, his wife Carol Ochs confirmed at the New York Times.
From starring roles in ’80s shows “The Equalizer” and “The Whoopee Boys” to his first major role in Stanley Tucci’s short-lived crime drama “The Street,” MacVittie had a knack for playing tough, streetwise characters. in a variety of movies and TV shows. He would go on to play memorable roles in high-profile series like “The Deuce,” “Sex and the City,” and “When They See Us.”
Born October 14, 1956 and raised in Rhode Island, MacVittie’s career took root in the New York theater scene. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University, he moved to New York. In 1979, he doubled for Al Pacino in a cover of “American Buffalo” by David Mamet; he would go on to play Bobby on Broadway and in theaters across the country, as well as in London’s West End.
The following year he starred in the Ensemble Studio Theater production of Whats So Beautiful About a Sunset Over Prairie Avenue? A few years later, he is one of the founders of a collective of young stage and film artists called “Naked Angels”, which counts among its members Marisa Tomei and Matthew Broderick.
Eventually, he embarked on a second career as a nurse, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Hunter College in 2013. After a four-year hiatus, he returned to the screen with guest starring roles in ‘Blue Bloods’, ‘Chicago Med, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “When They Us” by Ava DuVernay, among others.
In tribute to MacVittie, his colleagues and admirers remembered him as a “magnificent” friend and actor. Fellow actor Rob Morrow post a cheeky reminiscence of their time in Naked Angels on Twitter, writing, “Another of our dear friends has passed away; RIP @BruceMacVittie I took this photo of Bruce when we were building the #NakedAngels space on 17th street circa 1988. I was determined, according to the nude on our behalf, to take a photo of someone naked in the raw space and Bruce volunteered.”
In an interview with The New York Times, Al Pacino said he “loved” MacVittie, adding that “her performances were always sparkling and crackling; a heart and a joy to watch. He was the epitome of the struggling New York actor and he made it work. We will miss him.
“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” showrunner Warren Leight called MacVittie “the real deal.”

The most recent of his 93 on-screen acting credits includes “Call Jane,” the clandestine abortion drama that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
MacVittie is survived by his daughter Sophia Oliva Ochs MacVittie and his second wife Carol Ochs.
