After its debut in 1965, The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe became a staple of the BBC’s summer school holiday schedules and was last broadcast in the early 1980s.

Hoffmann was 23 when the series was made, and it was his first professional acting job after leaving theater school in Paris. He had fond memories of the production, even adopting Dick the dog as his own pet.

Robert Hoffmann was born in Salzburg, Austria on August 30, 1939 and spent three years studying acting at the Poule Vanneck Academy in Paris. Already a polyglot, he also learned horse riding and fencing.

He had a brief singing career in a duet with his sister Evi and he went on to star in 50 films in different languages, most of which made the most of his good looks and tanned, muscular physique, including B-movie horror- thrillers, steamy comedies and historical novels.

These included such titles as Femmine insaziabili (aka The Insatiables or Carnal Circuit, 1969); Anglique, Marquise des Anges (1964); Kampf um Rom (The Last Roman, 1968) in which he was Totila, king of the Ostragoths, and the Italian giallo Ragazza tutta nuda assassina nel parco (literally Naked Girl Killed in the Park, 1972).
