Actor Govinda joins Shinde Sena: 'Return to politics after 14 years of vanvaas'
Veteran Bollywood actor Govinda made his political comeback ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and joined Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra Chief Minister Shiv Sena in Mumbai. Govinda joined Shiv Sena at Balasaheb Bhavan after meeting the chief minister earlier in the day.
Sources told India Today TV that Govinda may contest the northwest Mumbai seat on the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) ticket, challenging Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Amol Kirtikar.
Speaking on the occasion, Govinda said that he never thought that he would return to the same field. “I am back (in politics) after 14 years of ‘vanvas’ (exile),” he remarked.
“Mumbai seems more beautiful and developed since Shinde became the chief minister,” the actor said, adding that he would work in the field of art and culture if he gets a chance.
NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Jayant Patil slammed Govinda for joining the Shinde camp.
“He is not a popular actor. Eknath Shinde should have taken an actor who is popular. He should have taken a good actor. I think Eknath Shinde does not watch films. If he watched films, he would know who is the best actor,” Patil said.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Govinda contested from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha under the Congress banner. He defeated senior BJP leader Ram Naik.
However, Govinda later parted ways with the party and Congress politics, deciding not to contest elections in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
The Lok Sabha polls for Maharashtra's 48 seats will be held in five phases between April 19 and May 20 and votes will be counted on June 4.
Seat sharing has been a point of contention for Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Eknath Shinde is yet to finalize seat sharing with the BJP and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar.
Meanwhile, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray left the Congress and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) in turmoil. candidates announced for 17 Lok Sabha seats.
The constituents of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Congress, Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) were hold discussions on seat sharing for the 48 constituencies in Maharashtra. Sena (UBT) has declared that it will contest 22 seats in the state.
The Congress is demanding three of the six seats in Mumbai – North West, North Central and South Central.
