53-year-old hairdresser beaten outside West Hollywood nightclub
The family of Albert Vasquez, 53, is asking for help finding the people who brutally beat the gay hairdresser outside a West Hollywood nightclub nearly two weeks ago.
“It’s been 10 days now and we have nothing,” said his sister Gloria Jimenez. “He only says he was attacked.”
Jimenez said his brother and friends were walking back and forth between the Gym Bar and Heart WeHo in Santa Monica when Vasquez was beaten outside the busy nightclub. She hopes witnesses who saw what happened to her brother will come forward.
“We know he was with some friends at a bar and from that bar he headed to another bar because they were next to each other,” Jimenez said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it received a call for someone needing medical attention around 11 p.m. on April 5, but did not find Vasquez. Jimenez said his brother was taken to the hospital by a paramedic. Investigators said officers learned of the attack four days later, after Vasquez woke up from surgery.
“His skull was fractured in two places,” she said. “He had to have part of his scalp removed to allow his brain to develop because of all the inflammation the brain goes through.”
Vasquez moved from New York to West Hollywood during the pandemic. His family fears this attack was a hate crime.
“We've heard different things and we're not sure what to believe at this point,” Jimenez said.
Even though there were security cameras on the street, Vasquez's family couldn't see any footage, and it's unclear whether the police could either.
It is unclear whether Vasquez suffered permanent damage from the beating. However, he is expected to need therapy to learn to walk and talk in the future.
The family is hoping someone who witnessed the attack will come forward to help bring justice.
“God is great,” Jimenez said. “We trust in God that the truth will prevail.”
