Book signings underway for “Opposite of Collision” by local author Richard M. Timberlake
Local WILLIAMSBURG author Richard Timberlake will be at two upcoming book signings for his new novel “Opposite of Collision,” a story of espionage, resilience and unlikely connections.
Informed by 35 years of CIA experience, Timberlake's book follows Randall Betts, a former Marine turned CIA agent who is motivated by a haunting past event as he travels a perilous path of loyalty and deception, and Munir Afridi, a young man from a remote Pakistani village thrust into the turbulent world of Islamic militancy. Together, everyone sees the blurring lines between ideals, beliefs, allies, and enemies through their individual journeys all set in the counterterrorism world of the 1990s.
“The thing I have woven into [the story] These are real facts and dates about the terrorist attacks that took place during this time period,” Timberlake explained. Examples include the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, and the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City housing complex. the Khobar Tower in 1996 in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
“I wove these [events] in the story so that it helps make the story even more credible about what this terrorist group is plotting,” he continued.
Timberlake says his fascination with cinema and his desire to become a director motivated him to write a screenplay after his time at the CIA. After thinking about the story and its intricacies, he decided to turn it into a novel. He is currently working on a sequel.
A book signing will take place on May 5 at Barnes & Noblesfollowed by another Turn the page Bookstore June 16 for Father's Day. Both signings will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Additionally, Timberlake donated a signed copy of the novel to the Williamsburg Regional Library.
