Vidya Balan reveals why Bollywood stars can't play gay characters on screen like Mammootty in Kaathal – The Core

Malayalam cinema today is appreciated across the country for its consistent production of progressive films. Vidya Balan today praised superstar Mammootty for playing a gay character in the highly acclaimed film Kaathal: The Core.

While praising the Malayalam superstar, Vidya also said that none of the big actors in Bollywood can play a gay character on screen.

Speaking on the Unfiltered with Samdish podcast, Vidya Balan shared that a Malayalam superstar like Mammootty can play a gay character as there is a more educated audience in Kerala. While appreciating the actor's efforts, the actress said that it was easier there because the society was open to it.

Vidya also called Mammootty a safe actor. She said stars are revered in the South, but he deserves appreciation for continuing to play a difficult character without worrying about the consequences.

Talking about the possibility of Bollywood stars doing films like Kathaal, she said she didn't believe any of the Hindi stars would be able to do that. However, after seeing Ayushmann Khurrana in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, she said she hopes the new generation can chart a new path.

Vidya Balan is currently making headlines for her latest theatrical release Do Aur Do Pyaar which received critical acclaim. Directed by Shirsha Guha Thakurta, it is a romantic comedy centered around married couples. Apart from Vidya Balan, the film stars Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D'Cruz and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
