Memorable 'Game of Thrones' Actor Ian Gelder Dies at 74

Ian Gelder, who played the stoic warrior in “Game of Thrones” Kevin Lannister, died, her husband announced Tuesday. He was 74 years old.

The actor died months after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December, his wife, actor Ben Daniels, wrote on Instagram.

“It is with immense sadness and a heavy heart broken into a thousand pieces that I leave this position to announce the passing of my cherished husband and life partner, Ian Gelder,” Daniels wrote. “I had stopped all work to care for him, but neither of us knew it would happen so quickly.”

Gelder was as inspiring in death as in life, his wife said, describing his partner of more than 30 years as “my absolute rock” and a “wonderful, wonderful actor” who touched everyone with “his heart and its light”.

Gelder approached his “terrible illness” with courage and without any self-pity, Daniels added.

Born in 1949, the British actor was also known as Mr. Dekker in 2009's “Torchwood: Children of Earth,” the sci-fi spinoff of the 2005 “Dr. Who” revival. In “Game of Thrones,” he played Lord Tywin’s younger brother Lannister, appearing in 12 episodes before his character’s demise.

The actor appeared in two other series in preparationwith roles in the second season of “Interview With the Vampire,” which premieres this Sunday on AMC, and Prime Video's “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power,” which will be released this summer, according to TV Insider.

Gelder was also a prolific stage actor, appearing frequently with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Ian Gelder” said co-directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey on .

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” they added.

Gelder's representatives also paid tribute.

“It was a pleasure to represent Ian Gelder for the last part of his career,” posted agent Daniel Albert on X. “The world will be less without him. Ian was such a lovely person and a wonderful actor. I know he will be greatly missed by all who loved him and worked alongside him.
