Hollywood has closed and we won’t be getting any new movies for a while. We, film buffs stranded at home in Rome, are not without entertainment options, so I turned to video on demand for the rather charming “Emma”.
Quite a few movies that debuted on the big screen before the country closed were rushed through streaming and digital output, to make at least a little money for the studios. “Emma” is one of those movies that I missed in theaters but I’m glad I caught up with it at home. It’s a charming adaptation of a Jane Austen classic and worth the price if you’re looking for a new and simple romantic comedy.
“Emma” stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Emma Woodhouse, a wealthy young woman from the early 1800s in England who enjoys playing matchmakers for her friends and family in her small, quiet country village. But Emma isn’t as smart as she thinks, and her friends and family aren’t as malleable as she thinks, so mild and romantic shenanigans ensue.
I have no personal history with Jane Austen’s original novel or the adaptations made previously, so I entered “Emma” blindly and had a good time. The new film does not try to reinvent the wheel or bring particularly crazy elements to its adaptation, but it strives to have fun with the source material.
“Emma” has both style and substance. Everything is a bit of dandy entertainment in pastel colors, drawing heavily on the accents and manners expected from a Jane Austen novel from the 1800s. British actors are all ready to put on a show in their costumes. era and their ways of speaking. It is picturesque.
The story and the characters are also well interpreted, everyone gives a solid performance and fulfills their roles well. Taylor-Joy easily carries the film as the main character, someone intriguing and kind-hearted. And she is surrounded by a very nice cast. Bill Nighy is particularly fun as a hypochondriac father who is always worried about feeling a little draft in his big mansion.
“Emma” doesn’t try to jostle you with her comedy, instead of keeping it subtle and a bit silly. I rather liked it. Same thing with romance. Everything is very fun.
If you are looking for a new movie to enjoy yet another night, “Emma” is charming, quaint and just entertaining enough to be worth your time. He hasn’t had a big theatrical release, so now’s the chance to attend the series.
