Trenchers, asphalt rollers were jumping, and water trucks were splashing over 400 children smiling with delight as they climbed beyond the controls of some of their favorite things: big road equipment.
Poe Asphalt Paving Day gave the children the opportunity to leave their Tonka trucks at home in a pile of dirt and operate some of the toughest and loudest equipment on the road.
Asphalt machines, front loaders, bulldozers, street sweepers and lorries were among 18 pieces of equipment that children could ride and drive.
All day long, the playground at Poe’s was busy actively while Poe’s workers in bright red jackets escorted the children to the yellow machine of choice, where they would place the children inside to sit next to or on the driver’s laps.
For Keeton Benedict, 7, of Clarkston, an asphalt roller coaster was “the scariest ride.”
Why?
“Because it was fun going through mud puddles.”
Benedict’s father Kim, who brought him to the event on Saturday, works in Poe.
Amy Rossister, 6, of Lewiston, said she liked the truck because she needed to spray another truck with a water explosion.
Shad Carkuff, 7, of Spokane, thought the adults who allowed him to ride a riot on the street were “pretty cool.”
“You have a long way to go. I drove all the time,” he said.
The day was a dream come true for kids like Ben Byrd, 4, a seasonal viewer of a building whose favorite videos at home are construction.
Judging by the smiles on the faces of 40-year-old Poe workers who donated their time to the event, they had fun as kids.
“This has been a great day for everyone,” said Mark Poe, owner of the asphalt company. “It’s also a neat way to get Poe involved in the community.”
Heavy Equipment Day was so successful, it brought in over $ 2000 for
Clarkston’s affiliate of the Valley Boys and Girls Club, organizers said they expect it to be an annual event.
