Princess PROMise prom dress charity started by Northville student
Starry-eyed in satin, silk, sequins and sequins, 16-year-old Northville High School student Isabella Mach truly believes that everyone deserves a chance to feel like a princess, even just for one night. If the tiara fits you, wear it.
With prom season fast approaching, Isabella has promised to make her shooting star wishes and frog kisses come true, just like a fashionable fairy godmother, by gifting gently used dresses to girls of the Detroit metropolitan area through its new organization, “A princess's promise“.
“I call it (A Princess PROMISE) because everyone deserves to feel like a princess,” she said. “I think it's really great to dress up, to be able to have a moment to feel special and glamorous. Not everyone has that opportunity.”
When she was little, Isabella's favorite thing to do was dress up. Years later, she still enjoys dressing up, even when everyone around her remains sweaty casual.
So when Isabella had the opportunity to attend the biggest fashion event of many a high school student's career, prom with a friend, while she was still a sophomore, she was at angels.
However, during her own preparations for prom, she realized two things: the importance of tradition in a teenager's high school experience, and the price. While many girls dream of their prom as soon as they start elementary school, not all can afford new dresses, shoes, accessories and other “necessities” that might be available when the time comes.
This thought occupied Isabella's mind, especially as she entered first year, and “graduation” became a more relevant word. But it wasn't until February that she decided to use her passion for fashion to address the needs she saw in the metro Detroit community.
“Everyone deserves the chance to dress up, to look their best, so I thought, well, I like fashion, I know a lot of other girls and boys like fashion, so I wanted to do something that could really help broaden all of our interests,” she said.
She created a website using Shopify, then went to NextDoor to ask for donations for her new organization and for Neighbors Delivered.
“A lot of people wear all these extra dresses because they have multiple kids or went to prom themselves and haven't worn that dress since. Or for any formal event; I have a few dresses of bridesmaids here, so people have a lot to give and give,” Mach said.

Once she started receiving donations, she was able to use them to continue building her website, adding each item to the site with images and sizes listed. Very quickly, requests to donate or collect a dress began to slowly trickle in.
Since starting her collection at the end of February, she has received 56 dresses, 13 pairs of shoes, seven handbags and even five suits.
“They're all different styles, different sizes, which is great. People like the variety,” Mach said. “Some of them are from the early 2000s, and others are more modern, from places like Windsor at Twelve Oaks Mall.”
As for fashionista favorites, Mach pointed out a shorter red dress with pleats and ruffles that twist the front into a rose-like pattern, as well as a longer strapless black dress with pale pink buttons down the back and a bow under the bust, but she always finds something to love in every item of clothing she's collected.
Now that she has a solid group of dresses available, Mach has been trying to get the word out about A Princess PROMise by contacting principals and counselors in metro Detroit, but she wants the most downtrodden high school students to find out how she can the bibbidi-bobbidi-boo. become the belle of the ball.
Although she's willing to deliver dresses within an hour's drive of Northville, with the help of her parents, Isabella is transforming part of her father's office in Plymouth into a fitting space and picking up dresses.
“We're setting up a dressing room where we can have all the displays on display so people can come see and try on different dresses. There will be a mirror and we can finally start handing out all these dresses now that prom is coming up,” says -She.
To donate or collect a dress, visit A princess's promise and fill out the corresponding form so Mach can contact you for next steps, or email him at [email protected].
