Scottie Scheffler favourite to win men's golf gold at Paris Olympics

Two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler has been the world number one for over a year now, and he's eager to represent his country and add the title of Olympian to his list of achievements.

Playing for your country is always extremely exciting and it will be quite surreal to do it on the Olympic stage, Scheffler said inan interview with the american teamIt's also a good way for people to brag to me that golf is not a sport, but I can say it's an Olympic sport.

This will be Scheffler's first time competing in the Olympics and his first chance at a gold medal.

The Official World Golf Ranking on June 17 determined the 60 players who will compete in the men's competition. Countries can enter two players, or up to four players if they are among the top 15 in the ranking.

Team USAwill be composed ofScheffler, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.

In theMen's Olympic Golf RankingsScheffler takes first place, Schauffele takes third place, Clark comes in fifth place and Morikawa ranks seventh. Schauffele and Morikawa participated in theTokyo 2020 Olympicswith Schauffele winning the gold medal forTeam USAin individual stroke play.

The Olympic field includes 60 of the world's best golfers from 33 countries. They will compete individually, as they would in any standard tournament, in stroke play.

I think with the format it's more of an individual tournament because there's no real team aspect to it, Scheffler said inan interview with the Dallas Morning Newsin June. But as far as going out there and playing, I would approach it the same way I would play a tournament here.
