JD Vance's Wife Usha Vance's Style Was on Show at RNC
As the wife of newly elected Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, Usha Chilukuri Vance has generated a lot of interest across the political spectrum.
The online interest was sparked by the 38-year-old attorney's opening remarks at Wednesday night's Republican convention in Milwaukee. After resigning from her job as a lawyer at Munger, Tolles & Olson, the mother of three has been thrust into the media spotlight not only for her marital bond, but also for her own background and fashion sense.
Before welcoming Donald Trump’s running mate to the stage, Vance spoke about her upbringing in San Diego, one of two daughters born to Native American parents. Her father is an aerospace engineer and her mother is a dean at the University of California, San Diego. Wearing a cobalt blue Badgley Mischka dress, Vance described meeting her future husband as students at Yale University Law School years ago and how they became friends. Noting that the former Marine came with the support of the GI Bill, she said he is still “the most interesting person” she knows.
Vance described the author of “Hillbilly Elegy” as “a working-class guy who had overcome childhood traumas I could barely imagine to end up in Yale Law School, a tough Marine who had served in Iraq, but whose idea of a good time was playing with puppies and watching the movie 'Babe.'”
Usha Vance, who also earned an undergraduate degree from Yale and a graduate degree from Cambridge University, said: “The fact that JD and I were able to meet, let alone fall in love and get married, is a testament to this great country,” she said. “It’s also a testament to JD, and it says a lot about who he is.”
She said: “It's safe to say that neither JD nor I expected to find [ourselves] in this position, but it's hard to imagine a more powerful example of the American dream, a boy from Middletown, Ohio.”

Like two other key speakers at this week’s convention, RNC co-chair Lara Trump and former Republican presidential candidate and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley opted for blue instead of the more expected Republican red. Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, wore a sleeveless royal blue Chiara Boni La Petite Robe gown for her speech Monday night at Fiserv Forum.
Vance’s off-the-shoulder draped midi dress retails for $495 and is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, among other retailers. While some political figures work directly with designers or through stylists, Vance did not consult with Mark Badgley and James Mischka of Badgley Mischka. She had to purchase the dress herself at retail, a Badgley Mischka spokesperson said.
The New York-based designers were traveling and unavailable for comment Thursday, he said.
