Big West Olympians – Brenda Martinez, UC Riverside
UC Riverside Alumnus Brenda Martinez Martinez competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a member of Team USA. Martinez shared her thoughts with The Big West's Chloe Clark to reflect on the journey and experience ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Martinez was a four-year member of the UC Riverside cross country and track teams, earning three All-America honors and winning the Big West individual crown in the 1,500 four times and the 800 three times. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native holds the Big West conference record (2:00.85) and championship record (2:03.45) in the 800 and the conference record in the 1,500 (4:09.52).
Martinez qualified for the 2016 Olympics in spectacular fashion. After failing to make the 800m, the former Highlander's main event, due to a stumble, Martinez dove across the finish line of the 1,500m to earn a spot on Team USA. At the Rio Olympics, the former Big West champion finished third in the preliminaries but failed to advance past the semifinals and placed 21st overall.
“Not many people can say they’ve been to an Olympic Games and competed at the highest level,” Martinez said. “It’s always a special sacrifice to make those years, and this year it paid off.”
