Defeated presidential candidates wrongly choose Jokowi as target: KPU
Jakarta. The two defeated presidential candidates in the February 14 elections wrongly chose President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as the target of their legal petition to challenge the election result, the General Election Commission (KPU) argued in court on Thursday .
Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo demand a new vote and the disqualification of President-elect Prabowo Subianto in their motion challenging the election result.
However, the motion is heavily loaded with accusations of widespread fraud by the sitting president, instead of legal arguments and evidence to challenge Prabowo's victory, said a lawyer representing the KPU at the Constitutional Court.
“The legal arguments focus largely on the president's actions, with the petition primarily containing allegations of violations or fraud by the president and his subordinates,” lawyer Hifdzil Alim said during the hearing.
“The fact is that the president is not participating in the current elections, nor is he accused in this electoral conflict,” he added.
Despite the serious flaws in the arguments, the plaintiffs insist that Prabowo be disqualified, he said, urging the committee to reject the petition in its entirety.
“These plaintiffs' arguments cannot be presented in this lawsuit because they chose the wrong target, unrelated to the motion,” the lawyer said.
Anies accused Jokowi of running veiled campaigns for Prabowo, who chose the president's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as his running mate. Anies' legal team said the massive state-funded welfare programs were intended to encourage voters to vote for Prabowo and Gibran.
Ganjar, meanwhile, suspected the president of political interference to ensure that Gibran was eligible even though he had not reached the minimum age requirement of 40 when he registered his candidacy.
Furthermore, Jokowi refused to comment on the ongoing hearing during which his name was mentioned several times by the plaintiffs.
“I cannot comment on what is happening in the Constitutional Court,” the president said.
