Jokowi asks Israel and Iran to avoid escalation
It is for this reason that Indonesian President Joko Widodo has asked both parties to the conflict to exercise restraint and avoid unnecessary escalation.
“The president's two messages are to continue making diplomatic efforts so that the parties concerned refrain from any escalation, because escalation will not benefit anyone,” Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said, referring to to Jokowi's statement during Tuesday's meeting (4/16).
Retno said his party continues to communicate with many parties in the Middle East and Western countries to discuss the development situation of the Israel-Iran conflict.
“Communication between foreign ministers continues once again so that relevant parties exercise restraint and there is no escalation,” he said.
Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel on Saturday evening (13/4), marking Tehran's first direct attack on the occupied territory.
The attack came in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus that killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps soldiers, including two generals.
Israel and its allies have shot down most of Iran's drones and missiles. It was reported that one person was injured in the attack.
But concerns about possible Israeli retaliation continue to fuel fears of a full-blown regional war.
