Trump airs grievances with Michael Cohen in exclusive Action News interview with former president despite gag order

With the presidential race almost underway, we already know: Pennsylvania will once again prove critical in the November election.

On Tuesday, presumptive Republican nominee former President Donald Trump spoke via satellite with Action News' Walter Perez from New York, where he remains tied up because of his ongoing secret criminal trial in Manhattan.

The interview took place before he returned to a Manhattan courtroom for his historic criminal trial.

The former president did not hesitate to express his grievances against one of the main witnesses in the case, Michael Cohen, despite the silence which forced him not to do so.

“Michael Cohen is a convicted liar, and he has no credibility. He was a lawyer and you rely on your lawyers. But Michael Cohen was a convicted liar. He was a lawyer for a lot of people, not just me . Then he came into trouble because of things outside of what he did for me,” Trump said.

The silence order effectively prohibits Trump from publicly discussing witnesses, jurors or court employees and is intended to prevent intentional intimidation.

Judge Juan Merchan decides to fine Trump for previous violations of this order.

In his exclusive conversation with Action News, the former president also discussed immigration, abortion and the economy.

“We're not respected around the world, our economy is rotten. Our border, when I see people pouring into our country, a lot of them are coming from prisons,” Trump said.

The former president has made no secret of his thoughts on the charges and the trial timeline.

“This is election interference,” he said. “They're trying to get Joe Biden elected. And what they want to do is see if they can hurt his opponent, but it's having the opposite effect.”

Susan Liebell, a political science professor at St. Joseph's University, believes the former president is hoping to control his speech.

“I think a lot of it depends on whether Trump can make this a persecution rather than a prosecution. Because I think he understands that he has a certain number of supporters who will understand this as a narrative of persecution “, Liebell noted.

Action News reached out to the Biden administration for a response to Trump's comments.

The administration referred us to its recently opened campaign office in North Philadelphia, where state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta addressed Pennsylvania voters on Biden's behalf.

“This is the place where American democracy was born. This is the place where we saved democracy in 2020. And I am confident this is the place where we save democracy again in 2024.” , Kenyatta said.

Trump says he disagrees.

“(Biden is) the worst president in our history,” Trump told Perez. “I don't want to say that. I wish he was a great, great president. I wouldn't even do that if he was, but he's the worst president in our history. He puts Jimmy Carter through for a genius.”

The most recent poll from Franklin & Marshall College reveals a tight presidential race in Pennsylvania.

The results show Biden with a slight lead over Trump, at 42% to 40%.

Of course, Pennsylvania is a battleground state, which could swing one way or the other.
