President Xi Jinping is in Paris to talk trade
Chinese President Xi Jinping has hailed China-France relations as a model of win-win cooperation between countries with different social systems. Reuters reports. Xi Jinping arrived in Paris yesterday and is expected to meet his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen today.
The rare two-day state visit comes amid growing tensions between the Asian giant and the European Union (EU) over trade disputes and ties between China and Russia.
Regarding the latter point, the EU would like to see China exert more pressure on Russia to end its war with Ukraine. If the Chinese are looking to deepen their relations with their European partners, it is really important that they hear our point of view and start taking it seriously,” a French diplomat told Reuters.

On the trade front, France is supporting an investigation into what the EU sees as an oversupply of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) exports. He also has excluded Cars made in China thanks to a program designed to encourage purchases of electric vehicles.
China has launched an anti-dumping investigation into spirits imported from the EU, mainly targeting French brandy.
Macron and Xi are also expected to discuss France's goal of exporting more agricultural products to China, as well as the French cosmetics sector's concerns over possible intellectual property issues arising from new Chinese import rules requiring the disclosure of closely monitored formulas.

The French president has said that he is determined to find a solution that also protects the interests of our businesses.
In Europe, Xi is expected to accompany Macron to the Pyrenees before traveling to Serbia and Hungary later in the week.
