Jokowi holds review meeting for Eid reunion; Calls for improved rest areas
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo or Jokowi held a limited meeting to evaluate the return of Eid 2024 at Merdeka Palace on Monday, May 6, 2024. Jokowi handed over several notes on the back home Implementation.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Muhadjir Effendy said in a press release that Jokowi had ordered that the number of rest areas be increased. Additional rest areas that were discussed include kilometer 97 towards Jakarta Merak.
The President also called for improvement of facilities at existing rest areas. “In every existing rest area, the facilities need to be improved,” Muhadjir said after the meeting. The limited meeting was also attended by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, Transportation Minister Budi Karya and Deputy Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara.
Muhadjir said the second issue raised by Jokowi was the revitalization of the Situbondo anchor port as a regular port, in addition to handling return flows. Travelers from Java typically use this port to cross to West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara and several small islands around Madura.
On the same occasion, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya said that 242 million people participated in the Eid return this year. Budi noted that incidents decreased by 8 percent, deaths by 12 percent, and minor injuries by 10 percent. However, the number of travelers suffering serious injuries increased by 33 percent.
Budi did not provide details on the data he mentioned. However, he cited a survey conducted by two government agencies, Statistics Indonesia and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, which said overall public satisfaction with returning home was 89 percent and for the free ride home program, 91 percent.
“The president reminded us that (the free return program) must go from South Sumatra to Bengkulu, from Riau to West Sumatra. This will increase people's desire to return home,” said Budi.
