This isn't the first time a person of color or a woman has run for president, but Vice President Kamala Harris is already facing a new wave of sexist and racist personal attacks.

His opponent, former President Donald Trump, has a history of personally insulting people of color, women and immigrants. Here are some of the attacks he has made against his opponents:

On Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis: “She ended up having an affair with the gang leader or a gang member.” (This claim is not supported by evidence.) On Harris: “They say she’s not qualified because she wasn’t born in this country.” (Harris was born in California.) On former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton: “I think the only card she has is the woman card.”

Trump has called undocumented immigrants “animals.” He has highlighted the non-European names of Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley and former President Barack Obama. He has denigrated women of color as “angry” or “mean.”

The list could go on, but Trump isn't the only one attacking Harris.

Several Republican members of Congress have already referred to Harris as a “DEI recruit” or “DEI vice president,” implying that the former U.S. senator and California attorney general was insufficiently qualified and was chosen only to meet a diversity, equity and inclusion quotient.

Impact on elections

Ange-Marie Hancock, director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, has studied Harris' career and how it was shaped by her identity as a multiracial woman.

She says Trump's language could impact undecided voters, whether consciously or unconsciously.

“If you were to poll independent or swing voters, I bet you would get a strong majority who would say… 'We really don't like the way he talks about women or his opponents,'” she said.

For swing voters who are leaning toward the Democratic ticket, Hancock said racist and sexist comments are unlikely to negatively impact their opinion of Harris. But for voters who are open to Trump:

“In fact, the impact would be even more negative, both because people fill in the gaps and say… ‘you know, maybe he’s right in some way’… But the other thing to consider is that we also have implicit biases.”

Impact beyond elections

Trump's rhetoric had implications far beyond the election campaign, Hancock says.

Hancock sees the current political climate as the result of a decades-long trend toward the “normalization” of racist and sexist attacks.

“I think in 2016 or 2020, the trend was still up… I think that trajectory has continued. I don’t necessarily think the trajectory is going to change in 2024,” she said.

And the hateful language and images used to describe Harris are only getting worse in more conservative circles, she said.

“Some of it can get particularly dark and draw on some of the most pernicious stereotypes of African-American and Asian-American women, sometimes very sexualized imagery.”

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
