Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's party says he is facing harsh prison conditions

Lahore: Jailed former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan is being held in solitary confinement in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, his party said on Thursday, saying it fears for his life as he is being held in extremely harsh conditions.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and close aide of the 71-year-old former prime minister, Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari, said Khan was being subjected to harsh treatment in jail to which even an ordinary prisoner should not be subjected.

To counter Khan’s resilience, authorities are resorting to new methods. The sewer cover in his cell is deliberately left open so that the cell remains filled with a foul stench. The water supply to his cell has been cut off and he now receives only one bucket of water a day, he said.

Known as Zulfi Bokhari, the British-born Pakistani politician and entrepreneur said prison staff chose to ignore him despite his repeated attempts.

“Even an ordinary prisoner is not exposed to such behavior, let alone an illegally incarcerated former prime minister,” Bokhari said, adding that despite all this, Khan says, “They can do whatever they want, but they cannot break me.”

Bokhari said the PTI founder's life was in danger as he was being subjected to inhumane prison conditions and denied basic necessities. Khan did not even have access to books and newspapers, he added.

“This deliberate mistreatment and isolation is not only unjust, but also poses a serious threat to her health and safety. They are an attempt to make her situation worse,” he said.

In a statement from Adiala Jail on Tuesday, Khan reiterated his allegations that the Army and the Joint Intelligence Service (ISI) were responsible for his current predicament. Khan, who has been incarcerated since last year, expressed serious concerns for his safety and well-being.

“ISI is controlling all administrative matters related to my imprisonment. I repeat, if anything happens to me, the army chief and the DG ISI will be responsible,” Khan had said on X on Tuesday.

Khan was arrested on August 5 after being convicted in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been kept in jail in connection with several cases.

Although the former cricketer-turned-politician was granted bail or his conviction was overturned, he has not been released.
