Imran remains firm on PTI's September 8 rally

RAWALPINDI:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on Thursday urged the people of the country to attend the party's rally in Islamabad on September 8.

He called on supporters to defy any obstacles that might be created to prevent them from participating in the event.

During a hearing at Adiala Jail, Imran told reporters that he condemned terrorism as it harmed the country. He denied reports that he had ordered party leaders, who had gone into hiding, to resurface.

Imran said that the PTI rally in Islamabad would go ahead as scheduled. “There will now be a rally in Islamabad on September 8. I request the entire nation to come out on September 8. Do not tolerate any form of obstruction on that day,” he said.

The PTI founder denied reports that he had ordered the party leaders, who were in hiding, to resurface. “The leaders who are in hiding are advised not to come out for now. If our people come out, they will be arrested. We are not afraid of jail, but the problem is that our people are being kidnapped,” he charged.

Imran reiterated that peace could be restored through transparent elections. He mentioned the rejection of his plan to introduce electronic voting machines (EVMs) by the then army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

“On February 8, they stole our mandate. Our people won by 60,000 to 70,000 votes. If four constituencies are opened, their theft will be discovered. People do not trust the leaders. The country has become a banana republic,” he said.

He accused the government of conspiring with the Chief Justice of Pakistan to steal the mandate of the PTI. The results of these four constituencies will be released after the retirement of Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa and this government will fall then, Imran said.

Imran said he condemns terrorism as it harms the country. He proposed dialogue with the Afghan Taliban government to stop terrorist acts, stressing that terrorism in the country cannot stop without the cooperation of the Kabul regime.

“I suggest that we talk with Afghanistan to end Pakistani terrorism,” he told reporters. [the then PTI government] spoke to an anti-Pakistani government [former Afghan President] Ashraf Ghani, so that the problem of terrorism is resolved,” he added.

He also referred to the surge in terrorist incidents in Balochistan, attacks in Kacha areas and street crimes. He added that the government had failed in its efforts to contain this menace. “You send back Afghan refugees, has terrorism ended? Terrorism has not ended, but hatred has increased.”
