Trump should not demand Imran Khan's release: Khawaja Asif

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday said President-elect Donald Trump was unlikely to seek the release of PakistanTehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from prison.

Asif made the comments after Republican candidate Trump won the 2024 US presidential election after four years.

“We don't think Trump will ask for the release of the PTI founder. Let's wait for 15-20 days and see what stand he takes,” the defense minister said while speaking on Geo News' special program on the American elections.

After Trump's victory, Khan congratulated the US president-elect, saying it would be good for “Pakistani-US relations based on mutual respect for democracy and human rights”.

The incarcerated prime minister said his party hoped Trump would push for peace, human rights and democracy around the world.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly and PTI lawmaker Omar Ayub Khan also congratulated Trump and his Vice President-elect JD Vance for their election victory.

These congratulations come as the party's founder remains imprisoned for more than a year after being convicted in several cases.

During his tenure as Prime Minister of Pakistan, Khan shared friendly ties with the Trump administration, which is why the PTI is celebrating the US president-elect's return to power as a potential advantage.

PTI never pinned hopes on Trump: Raoof Hasan

Meanwhile, PTI chief Raoof Hasan said the party never hoped that Khan would be released after Trump's victory.

“We have never pinned hope nor do we count on Trump's victory. We have got support from the judiciary, parliament and protests for the release of the PTI founder,” he said. he asserted.

Raoof said no such discussion had taken place within the parliamentary party.

He added that the PTI has “normal interaction” with the establishment, adding that it has no contact with the establishment regarding any “specific issue or Khan's release”.
